Kryptman Cordon
The Kryptman Cordon was an Imperial defensive line devised by Inquisitor Kryptman to check the Tyranid hive fleets in the 41st Millennium. It belongs to the strategic thinking associated with Kryptman’s Gambit, the Ordo Xenos proposal that the Imperium could not halt the swarms by conventional battle alone and should instead deny them biomass by force. The Cordon is recorded as a response to the Tyranid incursions from beyond the galactic rim, which were first identified as a systemic threat during the advance of Hive Fleet Behemoth and the later approach of Hive Fleet Leviathan. According to the accounts attached to the Cordon, its purpose was to establish a barrier of Imperial Navy and Inquisition forces across the approaches to the inhabited worlds, so that the hive fleets would meet stripped or fortified systems in place of undefended ones. Inquisitor Kryptman is the principal figure; the ships, Adeptus Astartes chapters and Imperial Guard formations that served along the line are not consistently named, and accounts differ on how far the Cordon was ever completed as a continuous barrier. Its methods, which were controversial within the Inquisition, included the acceptance of heavy losses among Imperial worlds in exchange for delaying the enemy. On the Orrery map the Cordon is anchored to Terra, the seat of the Imperium and the heartland that the wider Tyranid defence was intended to shield, although the fighting associated with it took place across the outer reaches of the Segmentum Ultima and the eastern approaches. On the timeline it sits within the 41st Millennium, alongside the Tyrannic Wars and the defence of Ultramar against Hive Fleet Behemoth. Its consequences are recorded as mixed: the Tyranid advance was slowed and diverted at great cost, but the hive fleets were not destroyed, and the Cordon is remembered chiefly as a measure of how far the Imperium was prepared to go to protect its core worlds.
