Lamenters Penitent Crusade
The Lamenters Penitent Crusade was the campaign of atonement undertaken by the Lamenters Chapter after the Badab War in the forty-first millennium. The Lamenters, a Chapter descended from the Blood Angels and long associated with misfortune, emerged from the Badab conflict (recorded as 901–912.M41) with heavy losses and a diminished reputation. The crusade is presented as the Chapter’s answer to that standing: a vow to redeem its name through service rather than argument, made while the wider settlement of the Badab Sector was being decided by Imperial authority on Terra. The crusade is not recorded as a single campaign in one theatre. It is better understood as a prolonged series of deployments in which the Lamenters, weakened in numbers, committed their remaining companies to hard wars wherever the Imperium required them, which is why the map anchor for the event is given as various rather than one world. Accounts differ on the exact order and scale of these actions, and this entry does not assign engagements that the established record does not attest. Contemporaries include the other Chapters drawn into the Badab War, whose own reckonings with the Imperium proceeded in parallel. The crusade is best placed on the timeline as the immediate aftermath of Badab, from the closing years of the forty-first millennium’s ninth and tenth centuries onward, and it remains open-ended in later tradition.
