Ninth Founding
The Ninth Founding is one of the numbered Foundings by which the Adeptus Terra raised new Space Marine Chapters in the centuries after the Horus Heresy. It belongs to the long administrative sequence that began with the Second Founding, when the primogenitor Space Marine Legions were broken into smaller Chapters to forestall any single commander from again threatening the Imperium as Horus had done. In the generations that followed, the High Lords of Terra sanctioned further waves of Chapter creation to replace losses and extend the Adeptus Astartes into regions left thinly held, and the Ninth Founding is recorded as one of these waves, undertaken with Terra itself as the administrative seat from which new Chapters were chartered and dispatched. Detailed knowledge of the Ninth Founding’s course is thin compared with better-documented Foundings such as the Second or the much later, ill-favoured Twenty-First. Imperial record-keeping across the tens of thousands of years since has been uneven, and surviving accounts differ on precisely which Chapters trace their origin to this particular wave, on the genetic stock and Primarch lineage drawn upon, and on the specific worlds or crusade fronts the new Chapters were raised to support. What is consistent across the tradition is the pattern it exemplifies: a Founding as a deliberate act of Terran authority, distinct from the spontaneous or crisis-driven creation of Chapters seen in later, more troubled eras of Imperial history. Because so much of the Ninth Founding’s detail is unresolved, the current status of any Chapters it produced cannot be stated with confidence; some may have been lost to war or Excommunicate Traitoris censure over the millennia, as befell Chapters from other Foundings, while others may survive unrecognised as products of this specific wave. The Founding nonetheless remains a fixed point in the broader chronology of the Adeptus Astartes, situated between the Second Founding’s reorganisation of the Legions and the later, more infamous Foundings of the Age of Apostasy, and it is through that chronology, anchored to Terra, that its place in the Imperium’s military history is best understood.
