Seventh Founding
The Seventh Founding is a named cycle in which the Adeptus Astartes raised new Space Marine Chapters from First Founding gene-seed. It belongs to the sequence of numbered Foundings that Terra sanctioned after the Second Founding broke the original Legions into smaller Chapters in the wake of the Horus Heresy, a policy adopted to prevent any single commander from again massing Legion-scale force against the Imperium. Convened roughly a century into that pattern, in the early to mid thirty-third millennium by most reckonings, the Seventh Founding is counted among the earlier waves of Chapter creation overseen by the nascent Adeptus Terra, though accounts differ on its precise year and on how many Chapters it produced. As with other Foundings of the period, new Chapters were seeded from gene-stock drawn from First Founding Legions and administered through Mars and the Adeptus Terra’s Chapter records, then assigned home worlds or garrison duties across contested and reconstituted sectors of the Imperium. The era was one of consolidation rather than singular campaign: the galaxy was still absorbing the losses of the Heresy and the unrest of the Scouring, and freshly raised Chapters were dispersed to shore up frontiers and enforce Imperial authority rather than to fight one unified war. No single battle or commander defines the Seventh Founding; its significance lies instead in the Chapters it added to the Adeptus Astartes roll and the precedent it reinforced for periodic, centrally sanctioned Chapter creation. Much of the Seventh Founding’s detail has not survived in accessible form, a fate shared by several early Foundings whose Chapter identities were later lost, reclassified, or folded into the Imperium’s tradition of Undiscovered Chapters. It is remembered chiefly as a link in the broader Founding cycle that runs from the Second Founding onward, a chronology anchored to Terra’s administrative records and to the ongoing project of rebuilding the Adeptus Astartes after the Heresy. Later Foundings would follow the same pattern it helped establish, making the Seventh Founding a minor but structurally important marker in the Imperium’s military history.
