The Beheading
The Beheading is the removal of High Lords of Terra by Drakan Vangorich, Grand Master of the Officio Assassinorum, during the War of the Beast. It is a political event of the Imperium’s highest council, distinct from any battle, and it is recorded as taking place on Terra in the closing years of the forty-first millennium, with consequences reaching into the forty-second. The name is applied to the act of striking at the Senatorum Imperialis itself, at a time when the Imperium’s ruling body was judged unable to answer the gravest Ork threat to the Throneworld since the Horus Heresy. The cause lay in the divisions among the High Lords as the Beast’s invasion gathered strength. Vangorich sought to counter the influence of Lord High Admiral Lansung in the Senatorum, to learn what the Adeptus Mechanicus was concealing about the Greenskins, and to check the ambitions of Inquisitor Veritus, whom he is recorded as having poisoned. Accounts describe him acting covertly against colleagues he considered unfit for the crisis, using the resources of the Officio Assassinorum rather than open debate. These moves ran alongside the military defence of the Imperium, in which Koorland, Chapter Master of the Imperial Fists, gathered the scattered Successor Chapters, and they belong to the same window as the bracketing battles at Ullanor and Luna. Other figures of the period include Inquisitor Wienand, Ecclesiarch Mesring and Grand Provost Marshal Vernor Zeck, though their precise roles in the removals are not firmly attested. The aftermath was a lasting reordering of the High Lords of Terra, which left the Assassinorum leadership with unusual authority over the Imperium’s government. That position did not endure: Vangorich is later recorded as overthrown, with one account placing this about a century after the war, and the succession of the Inquisition’s own reorganisation into the Ordo Xenos and Ordo Malleus is linked to the same period. Later tradition treats the Beheading as evidence of how far the Imperium’s central institutions could fracture under external threat. Its wider setting is given by the War of the Beast, the Officio Assassinorum and Terra, and by the High Lords who directed the Imperium from the Throneworld.
