Twentieth Founding
The Twentieth Founding is a Chapter-creation event of the thirty-sixth millennium, remembered chiefly for producing the Minotaurs Chapter. Unlike Foundings raised chiefly to garrison threatened sectors or replenish losses among existing Chapters, it is recorded as an initiative of the High Lords of Terra to place a new Chapter under closer central authority, with its gene-seed origin and creation deliberately left unpublicised in Administratum record-keeping. The Minotaurs that emerged from it were based within reach of the Imperium’s core rather than on a distant home world, and were understood by other Astartes to answer more directly to Terra than the wider tradition of Chapter autonomy allowed. Accounts of the Founding’s course are sparse beyond this central fact: it produced a Chapter whose loyalty to the High Lords, rather than to a fixed world or a founding Chapter’s tradition, defined its early identity. This set it apart from contemporaries raised in the same broad era, many of which trace descent from the Second Founding’s successor lines and hold conventional home worlds and shrine-cults of their own. The Twentieth Founding’s product instead grew into an instrument used at Terra’s discretion, its officers and Chapter Master drawn into a confidence with the Senatorum Imperialis that other Chapters found irregular, if not openly resented. The Founding’s legacy became most visible generations later, when the Minotaurs served as a loyalist force during the Badab War of the early forty-first millennium, acting against Chapters accused of defying Imperial authority. That later conflict is widely read as vindication of the Twentieth Founding’s original purpose: to ensure that at least one Chapter would stand ready to enforce Terra’s will against its own kind. The Founding is accordingly remembered less as a moment of expansion than as a deliberate act of political engineering within the Adeptus Astartes, its consequences bound to Terra and to the later crises of Chapter independence it was created to answer.
