Fafnir Rann
Lord Seneschal, Chapter Master of the Executioners
Also known as Lord Seneschal Rann
Homeworld: Inwit
Fafnir Rann was an Imperial Fists lord seneschal who served through the Siege of Terra and became the first Chapter Master of the Executioners. He is recorded as a warrior of Inwit, the world most closely associated with his origins, and he habitually fought with an axe in each hand. His rank of lord seneschal placed him among the senior officers of Rogal Dorn’s Legion, and his career spans the two eras of the setting: the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, and the divided Legion that followed.
During the Siege of Terra, Rann held sections of the planet’s defences that established doctrine had already classed as lost. The Orrery record attributes his method to two sources of instruction: Inwit, who taught that fortifications serve a tactical purpose rather than an absolute one, and Dorn, who taught which fortifications could be surrendered. Rann drew on both when deciding where to hold and where to give ground. His service belongs to the same window as that of Dorn and the other Imperial Fists officers who defended the Palace, and it ties Inwit, as his place of origin, to Terra, as the place where his reputation was made.
After the Heresy, the Imperial Fists were divided into separate Chapters, and Rann became the first Chapter Master of the Executioners. The role continued the work he had already been doing: boarding actions and close-quarters fighting with axes, conducted with a severity that opponents regarded as slaughter. The division of the Legion did not reduce his standing, and the Executioners remained linked to their parent Legion through his own career as a lord seneschal. The circumstances of his death are not recorded in the material this page draws on, and later accounts of the Chapter should be read with that limitation in mind.
Rann shows that the tradition of Dorn’s sons was not confined to fortification. Some of them were suited to offensive close combat, and he was among those who practised it. On the Orrery map and timeline he can be followed from Inwit to Terra and then into the post-Heresy Chapter structure; his nearest neighbours in the graph are Rogal Dorn, the Imperial Fists and the Siege of Terra.
