Zavier Gorn was an Imperial Army commander on virus-burned Tallarn, a tank officer who inherited the war after Governor Dellasarius was assassinated and then refused to let the planet sit in its own poison. He was not a Space Marine. He did not wait for one.
He drove the Khedive assault because a stalemate on that desert was just a slower way to lose. White Scars like Kalikgol and Army staff like Susada Syn surveyed what he had spent lives to take. Gorn treated the Khedive as ground, not symbolism, and paid the bill in armour.
After the offensive the records go thin, which is what Tallarn does to ordinary men even when they win. The Army still had his name on the Khedive. The desert kept the rest. Horus did not get the easy planet he had virus-bombed for.
