Hunt for the Wulfen

The Hunt for the Wulfen was a Space Wolves search of the 41st Millennium, centred on the Fenris region, for battle-brothers lost to the curse of the Wulfen. The Wulfen are Space Marines of the Chapter in whom the Canis Helix, the gene-seed line peculiar to the Space Wolves, has produced a physical mutation, leaving a larger, feral warrior that keeps only fragments of its former self. They are ordinarily held within the Chapter’s own fastness on Fenris and are little acknowledged beyond it, which is why an organised search for them carries weight within the Chapter’s wider history. Surviving accounts give limited detail, and the precise date within the 41st Millennium, the number of Wulfen sought and the forces committed are not firmly fixed. The operation is recorded as a Space Wolves undertaking, carried out by the Chapter’s own warriors under the authority of the Great Wolf, with the Wolf Priests, who oversee the gene-seed and the care of the afflicted, holding the relevant expertise. Its setting is the Fenris region, the Chapter’s home system, where the Fang and the surrounding wilds of the planet form the natural base and hunting ground for such work. The hunt is not recorded as ending the affliction, which is understood to recur in the Chapter’s gene-seed, and later tradition treats the Wulfen as a continuing concern rather than a resolved one.
