Kasper Ansbach Hawser

Kasper Ansbach Hawser was a Terran conservator who, during the Horus Heresy, became a skjald of the Space Wolves while unwittingly serving the Thousand Sons. Trained on Terra as a historian of pre-Unity cultures, he had already lived one obscured life among the Fenrisians as a young man before vanishing into old age and reappearing, memory disordered, to be taken in by the Rout as its saga-teller. Among the Space Wolves he carried the honorific Ahmad Ibn Rustah, echoing an old Terran travel-writer who had chronicled a northern people not his own, and this outsider’s vantage was precisely what the Wolves valued and what the Thousand Sons had engineered.

Hawser’s presence with the Rout was not accidental. Ahzek Ahriman’s Legion had prepared him across his hidden years as an unwitting instrument, so that the storyteller welcomed into Leman Russ’s war host for his usefulness also gave the Thousand Sons a channel into it. At the Council of Nikaea, where the Imperium debated the use of sanctioned psykers, the Thousand Sons magister Amon Tauromachian tried to break through to him and expose the deception, only for a daemon wearing Amon’s likeness to deepen Hawser’s confusion rather than resolve it. Unable to disentangle truth from manipulation, Hawser continued his work.

He accompanied the Rout to Prospero and there completed the saga he had been composing, believing it a historical record of the Wolves’ deeds. In fact the completed work functioned as a targeting rune, and its finishing coincided with the Space Wolves’ descent on Magnus the Red’s world in the opening act of the wider war between the Legions. Hawser thus stood, unknowing, at the hinge between two Legions’ purposes on the world where the Thousand Sons fell.

Fenris remembers Hawser in its sagas as a skjald who witnessed the Rout’s reckoning with Prospero; Terra remembers him, more soberly, as a cautionary case among conservators who accept a second, altered life in service of powers they cannot fully perceive. He set out to be a witness to history; instead two Legions, the Space Wolves and the Thousand Sons, each made use of him as a lens bent to their own ends, and no further trace of him is recorded after Prospero’s fall.
