Jericho Reach Crusade
The Jericho Reach Crusade, more widely recorded under the name Achilus Crusade, is the Imperial campaign to reclaim the Jericho Reach beyond the eastern fringe. The Reach had lain sealed from the wider Imperium for millennia behind the Jericho Maw, a warp phenomenon that rendered the region all but inaccessible, until the obstruction’s collapse in the early forty-first millennium opened a corridor for Imperial forces to advance. The crusade takes its alternative name from Lord Militant Achilus, credited in later Imperial record with the offensive that first forced the Maw, though accounts of the operation’s exact course differ between the regiments that took part. Once underway, the crusade drew together Astra Militarum regiments, Adeptus Astartes detachments from several chapters, elements of the Adeptus Mechanicus, and the Inquisition’s Ordo Xenos, coordinated through a standing crusade command rather than a single unified army. The Deathwatch maintains a persistent presence within the Reach, its kill-teams drawn upon to counter the xenos threats the crusade has uncovered rather than a single rival empire: Tau expansion attributed to the Kir’shan sept, Ork warbands and freebooter fleets, awakening necron tomb-forces, and the furtive, migratory Hrud. Fighting has proceeded unevenly across the Reach’s constituent sub-sectors, with some warzones nominally pacified while others remain contested or unexplored. No formal end to the Jericho Reach Crusade has been declared, and Imperial commanders continue to describe it as an open engagement rather than a completed conquest. Its status in the present era is that of a grinding, multi-front campaign whose gains are considered provisional, with the Reach’s proximity to unclaimed xenos empires ensuring that consolidation remains as pressing a concern as advance. The crusade is remembered chiefly for the precedent it set for coordinated Ordo Xenos and Deathwatch operations against a densely contested frontier, a model later crusades beyond the eastern fringe are said to have drawn upon.
