John Grammaticus

John Grammaticus is a Perpetual psyker and agent of the Cabal, his abnormally long life spanning the Unification Wars and the Horus Heresy. Born on Terra and a veteran of the wars that unified humanity’s birth world under the Emperor, he was one of the rare immortals later recruited by the Cabal, the alien coalition that studied the warp’s corruption of the galaxy and sought a means to end it. Grammaticus committed the remainder of his long service to the Cabal’s design: that allowing Horus to prevail over the Emperor would, by the Cabal’s calculation, destroy Chaos together with humanity itself, a bleak trade the Cabal judged preferable to Chaos’s unchecked survival. The plan ultimately failed, but Grammaticus spent the years of the Heresy acting as one of its instruments, working to steer primarchs and events toward that engineered outcome.

His Heresy-era work took him across the galaxy and into the company of figures who would themselves become touchstones of the war. He recruited Ollanius Pius, another Perpetual, to the Cabal’s purposes, and undertook a hunt for fulgurite, the fused glass left by warp-born storms and sometimes read as a portent by those attuned to the warp. His travels brought him to Macragge, homeworld of the Ultramarines, where he witnessed events at the heart of the Five Hundred Worlds during the war’s escalation. Grammaticus survived numerous encounters that a mortal agent could not have, a fact inseparable from his Perpetual nature, until the eldar seer Eldrad Ulthran’s campaign against the Cabal severed his employment with the coalition. He remained immortal and at large, but the mission that had structured his long service came to an end.

Grammaticus’s path eventually returned him to Terra, where he joined Ollanius Pius on the Perpetual’s final march in defence of the Emperor’s seat of power. There he disputed with Actae, another figure bound up in the era’s hidden currents, over the meaning and cost of what the Cabal’s design had asked of them. He lived to see the climax of the Heresy on Terra and the Emperor’s elevation to the Golden Throne, an ending that left the galaxy transformed and left Grammaticus, as ever, still walking.

A private habit attributed to Grammaticus is his practice of tying string around his own fingers or possessions as a message left for his future selves, a mnemonic against the erosions that even a Perpetual’s memory suffers across centuries. Accounts differ on whether the gesture reflects hope that some purpose will carry forward, or the caution of a man who has learned across an unnaturally long life not to trust any single century, or any single self, with the whole truth.
