Wrath of Magnus

The Wrath of Magnus was the Thousand Sons’ assault on Fenris, homeworld of the Space Wolves, led by the daemon primarch Magnus the Red. It is dated to the closing years of the 41st Millennium, with its consequences extending into the 42nd, and is associated with the wider upheaval of the Gathering Storm. The attack fell on the Fang, the Space Wolves’ fortress-monastery, and is distinct from the earlier Battle of the Fang of the 32nd Millennium, in which Magnus had previously struck at the same world. The enmity behind the campaign originated in the Burning of Prospero during the Horus Heresy, when the Space Wolves under Leman Russ razed the Thousand Sons’ home world, some ten thousand years before. Magnus returned to Fenris at the head of the Thousand Sons and hosts of Tzeentch daemons while much of the Chapter’s strength, including Great Wolf Logan Grimnar, was committed elsewhere in the Imperium’s defence. The defence of the Fang is recorded as being led by figures such as Njal Stormcaller and Ragnar Blackmane, who held the fortress-monastery level by level against sorcerous and daemonic assault. The attack is also recorded as aggravating the Wulfen curse latent within the Chapter, setting Space Wolf against Space Wolf even as the defence continued. Accounts differ on the extent of the damage, but the Fang is not recorded as having fallen, and Fenris remained the Chapter’s home. Magnus withdrew with his quarrel against Russ and the Space Wolves unresolved, and his attention turned to his other ambitions, among them the Planet of the Sorcerers within the Eye of Terror. For the Space Wolves, the episode brought the spread of the Wulfen curse into open view and marked the gravest trial of Fenris since the Heresy era. On Orrery it links the Fenris map anchor to the Thousand Sons and Space Wolves timeline threads, and forms the later counterpart to the Battle of the Fang, as a further stage in the enduring enmity between the two Legions’ heirs.
