Father Zweil

Father Zweil is an aged Ecclesiarchy priest who serves as the unofficial confessor to the Tanith First-and-Only regiment during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Of irregular standing within the wider Ministorum hierarchy, he holds no formal parish or diocese, and his conduct and doctrine are regarded by more orthodox clergy as eccentric at best and heterodox at worst.

Zweil is recorded as having been encountered on the shrine world of Hagia, where the Tanith First-and-Only passed during the Crusade’s campaigning, and from that meeting he attached himself to Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt’s command, travelling with the regiment thereafter rather than returning to any fixed ecclesiastical posting. In the absence of an officially sanctioned chaplain, he came to perform the rites the Ghosts required of a Guard regiment on campaign: last rites for the dying, blessings before battle, and burial services for a unit that, having lost its home world, had no native soil in which to lay its dead. His manner is irreverent and often abrasive, marked by dark humour and blunt speech that sits uneasily beside the solemnity expected of the Ecclesiarchy, yet it is tolerated, and valued, for the genuine comfort it brings to soldiers under his care. His closest bond is with Gaunt himself, whose trust he retains despite the friction his unorthodoxy periodically causes with more formal Ministorum authority encountered on other worlds.

As a fixture of the Tanith First-and-Only rather than of any single world or battle, Zweil’s significance lies in his continuity: he remains with the regiment across many of its campaigns during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, a spiritual constant for a formation defined by displacement and loss. His story is bound to Gaunt’s Ghosts as a body, and to the regiment’s wanderings from Hagia onward, rather than to any single documented death or elevation; accounts of his later fate vary, and he is best understood as an enduring presence within the regiment’s chronicle rather than a figure whose arc has a settled end.
