Betrayal at Calth aftermath
The Betrayal at Calth aftermath denotes the ruin left on Calth after the Word Bearers’ ambush on the Ultramarines there in 007.M31. The two Legions had mustered at Calth under a pretence of joint deployment against a xenos incursion; when Kor Phaeron and Erebus gave the signal, Word Bearers formations turned on their unwitting allies, opening fire on Ultramarines columns still in transit and crippling much of the XIII Legion’s void assets in the opening hours. Guilliman himself was absent from the system at the time, commanding operations elsewhere, leaving the defence to subordinate captains and the planet’s garrison. The fighting that followed was fought largely underground, as surviving Ultramarines withdrew into Calth’s subterranean hab-networks and mag-lev tunnels to wage a grinding defence against Word Bearers and their Chaos-touched auxiliaries. Erebus is recorded as having engineered the detonation of warp-tainted ordnance near the system’s star, an act that tore open the Ruinstorm, a warp anomaly that severed Calth and much of Ultramar from reliable astropathic and Warp-transit contact with the wider Imperium for years afterward. The Word Bearers, having inflicted grievous losses, ultimately withdrew rather than complete the system’s conquest, leaving a shattered but unconquered Ultramarines remnant to hold the ruins. The aftermath shaped the remainder of the Horus Heresy for the Ultramarines and their primarch: cut off behind the Ruinstorm, Guilliman turned to consolidating Imperium Secundus and later to the administrative and doctrinal reforms that followed the war, including the eventual Codex Astartes reorganisation of the Adeptus Astartes. Calth itself remained scarred, its underground cities rebuilt around memorials to the dead, and the betrayal is remembered as one of the starkest instances of Legion turning on Legion during the Heresy. It sits alongside the wider Word Bearers–Ultramarines enmity and the Ruinstorm’s isolation of Ultramar as a key hinge between the Heresy’s opening campaigns and Guilliman’s later restoration of Imperial order.
