Marius Gage was Chapter Master of the Ultramarines First and Guilliman's right hand at the Calth muster, the officer who was supposed to keep the theoreticals tidy while the primarch made the war look easy. A daemon took his hand on the Macragge's Honour. Thiel's red helm was the reason he kept the rest of him.
He took the flagship after Kor Phaeron anyway and chased the Infidus Imperator out of the Veridian dark while the Legion burned below. Calth taught him that the XIII could lose a hand, a fleet, and a doctrine in the same hour and still be expected to function.
After the Codex split the Legion he became the first Chapter Master of the Ultramarines proper. The title was smaller than First Master. The work was not. Gage had already learned how to run a war with missing pieces.
