Ollanius Persson

Ollanius Persson was a Perpetual, an immortal human of Terra who served the Emperor and died aboard the *Vengeful Spirit* during the Horus Heresy. He belonged to the small number of humans whose lifespans exceeded any recorded span, and he served as a soldier through much of human history. Accounts place him in an early age as the Emperor’s Warmaster, a post from which he is recorded as having walked away from a tower of Enuncia. By the time of the Great Crusade he had adopted a quiet life as a Catheric farmer on Calth, where his neighbours knew him as ‘Pious Oll’ and had no reason to suspect an age beyond that of any elderly settler.

His rediscovery came through the Horus Heresy. When the Word Bearers struck the Ultramarines at Calth, John Grammaticus, himself a Perpetual, removed Persson from the world before the fighting could claim him. Persson then travelled through a galaxy in open war, guided by an athame, a ritual blade, and the journey carried him from Calth to the flagship *Vengeful Spirit*, then in Horus’s hands. Grammaticus is the principal contemporary attached to this passage; the wider circle of Horus, the Emperor and the Warmaster’s loyalists defines the window in which it takes place, between the Calth ambush and the last confrontation above Terra.

Aboard the *Vengeful Spirit*, Persson is recorded as having dissuaded the Emperor from taking the role of the Dark King, an alternative that would have altered the course of the war. When the Emperor fell in his duel with Horus, Persson stood over him and discharged his lasgun into the Warmaster. Horus destroyed him with the weapon known as the Talon. Through this act Persson is said to have bought the Emperor several seconds, a delay that matters chiefly because of what followed at the close of the Heresy, the period the timeline groups under the End and the Death.

Persson’s status is dead, and his afterlife is one of conflation rather than continuity. In the Imperial Cult, his identity and deeds were merged with those of Ollanius Pius, so that the Warmaster of the early age and the farmer of Calth became a single sainted figure. This is why the name ‘Ollanius Pius’ survives in Imperial tradition while Ollanius Persson, the man, is recorded mainly in accounts of the Perpetuals. On the Orrery, his map anchor is Terra, his second attested location is Calth, and his timeline hooks are the Perpetuals’ long history and the End and the Death.
