Dwell Campaign
The Dwell Campaign is a Horus Heresy-era conflict on the world of Dwell, pitting Iron Hands remnants against forces of the Sons of Horus Legion. It belongs to the scattered, unofficial actions later grouped under the Shattered Legions period, when Iron Hands companies broken at the Isstvan V dropsite massacre regrouped without central command and struck at Traitor assets wherever they could be found. Dwell is recorded as one such flashpoint, drawn into the wider war not through strategic importance alone but because Sons of Horus elements moving in support of Warmaster Horus’s advance on Terra held ground or matériel the Iron Hands judged worth denying them. Accounts of the campaign describe a war fought without the set-piece formality of the earlier compliance era: ambush, sabotage, and close mechanised assault replaced the ordered drives of the Great Crusade. Iron Hands survivors, embittered by the death of their primarch Ferrus Manus and contemptuous of any accommodation with the Traitors, are held to have pressed the fighting with a severity that later chroniclers link to the Legion’s harsher post-Isstvan temperament. The Sons of Horus, for their part, fought to secure their captain’s lines of advance rather than to hold Dwell for its own sake, and later tradition holds that the engagement never produced a clean strategic verdict for either side. The Dwell Campaign’s final outcome is not consistently recorded, and it survives chiefly as one entry among the many Shattered Legions actions that filled the years between Isstvan V and the Siege of Terra. Its significance lies less in territory won or lost than in what it illustrates: the fracturing of Legion warfare into disconnected reprisals once the Heresy’s opening battles had broken the old chains of command. Within the Orrery’s record it stands alongside the other Iron Hands actions of the period and the pivotal Isstvan and Terra campaigns that frame it in time.
