Marius Vairosean

Marius Vairosean was captain of the Emperor’s Children Third Company and the first of the Noise Marines, warriors who fight with sonic weapons. An officer from Chemos, he took the Kakophoni, an ensemble maintained by Fulgrim for concert performance, and made it an instrument of war. He died on Iydris, killed by Ignatius Numen of the Iron Hands.

Vairosean’s conversion of the Kakophoni followed the Legion’s fall to Slaanesh, the Chaos power associated with excess and sensation. Isstvan V was the engagement at which he first appeared as a Noise Marine. On Iydris he was confronted by Numen, a deaf Iron Hands Morlock. Because Numen could not hear the sound on which Vairosean relied, it had no hold over him. Vairosean, absorbed in his own noise, failed to register the Iron Hand with the boltgun, and Numen killed him.

The Kakophoni outlived their first captain, and the Third Company continued its sonic warfare without him. Vairosean’s career ran from company commander, formed on Chemos, to the first Noise Marine, a change the Legion’s fall to Slaanesh made possible. His death is chiefly noted for its cause: Numen’s deafness, which left him immune to the weapon that had defined his opponent.
