Ignatius Grulgor

Ignatius Grulgor, known as the Eater of Lives, was a Death Guard captain from Barbarus whose death aboard the Eisenstein did not end his service to the Legion. He commanded the Second Company and, like Mortarion’s Legion as a whole, followed Horus into rebellion, standing among the traitor officers at Isstvan III when the Warmaster turned the assembled loyalist forces into a killing ground.

When Nathaniel Garro and a company of loyalist Death Guard seized the frigate Eisenstein to carry warning of the Warmaster’s treachery to Terra, Grulgor was aboard, concealing both his allegiance to the traitors and a corruption already working through his body. As the ship fled toward Luna, his condition broke into open plague-taint and he moved to sabotage the escape; Garro confronted and killed him, casting his body out through an airlock into the void in what was meant to be a final death. Before that end, Grulgor had already passed infection to Solun Decius, a legionary among the Eisenstein’s company, seeding a corruption that would surface only later.

Nurgle did not let the death hold. Grulgor’s return was marked by the war for Molech, where the Death Guard fought during the later stages of the Heresy, and he came back in a form the Fourteenth Legion could acknowledge openly rather than hide. He took a place in the retinue of Typhus, whose own ascent had reshaped the Legion’s command, but service in that shadow did not satisfy him, and the warp in time raised him further, to the rank of daemon prince.

As a daemon prince, Grulgor retained the grievances and appetites of his mortal captaincy, and the Death Guard has continued to reckon with him as an active presence rather than a settled casualty. His case — a captain killed, reborn, and elevated beyond his old rank — shows how little finality death held within a Legion given over to Nurgle. Garro, Decius, and Typhus remain the figures most closely bound to his story, spanning the flight from Isstvan III to Luna and the war at Molech and beyond.
