Sanakht

Sanakht was a swordsman of the Thousand Sons who served as Ahriman’s duellist during the Horus Heresy, prizing bladework as a discipline distinct from sorcery. His office was not that of a Fellowship captain, the rank by which most of the Legion’s officers held authority; Sanakht’s standing rested instead on single combat at close range, a role the Thousand Sons accommodated alongside their orders of sorcery. His technique was reportedly one the Corvidae, the cult tasked with foresight and divination, could not predict, a quality that set him apart even among a Legion that prized the seen and the foretold.

Within a Legion of sorcerers, Sanakht held that a perfect cut was a kind of truth, and among the Thousand Sons this conviction passed for a discipline in its own right, equal in seriousness to the study of the warp. Prospero trained seers by the thousand, but Sanakht stood among those who preferred steel to sight, a distinction that placed him close to Ahriman without making him one of the cults.

Lucius of the Emperor’s Children came to Sanakht’s tower on Prospero seeking to understand why death had not kept him, a meeting that marked Sanakht as a swordsman whose reputation reached beyond his own Legion even before the Heresy’s end. Sanakht survived the burning of Prospero and the cabal politics that followed among the Thousand Sons’ surviving sorcerers, remaining close to Ahriman through the Rubric and its aftermath rather than withdrawing into isolation as many of his Legion did.

In the era after the Heresy, Sanakht remains within Ahriman’s orbit, seeking a war that will not reduce him to dust as it did so many of his Legion. His preference for the blade over sorcery did not spare him the long exile that followed the Rubric of Ahriman, and he endures as one of the few Thousand Sons whose identity was forged at the edge of a sword rather than in the study of the warp.
