Maloghurst

Equerry to Horus

Also known as The Twisted, Equerry Maloghurst

Homeworld: Cthonia

Maloghurst, called the Twisted, was equerry to Horus Lupercal in the Luna Wolves and Sons of Horus during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy. Associated with Cthonia as his homeworld, he served as the primarch’s chief of staff, handling correspondence, counsel and the practical business of command that lay outside the duties of the line captains. His office made him one of the few figures with continuous access to Horus across the Crusade, the Warmaster’s elevation after the Ullanor campaign, and the opening of the civil war.

His physical condition dates from the campaign on Sixty-Three Nineteen, where he was crippled and thereafter carried the epithet by which he is best known. The injury ended his usefulness as a front-line warrior but not his standing: he became the legion’s principal administrative and political intermediary, trusted to carry messages and manage sensitive exchanges that captains such as the members of the Mournival could not or would not deliver themselves. In this role he stood alongside Ezekyle Abaddon, Horus Aximand and Tarik Torgaddon in the primarch’s circle, and dealt with outside figures such as Erebus of the Word Bearers, whose influence on Horus grew during the same years.

After Horus was wounded before the final war for Terra, Maloghurst is recorded as undertaking Warp rites with Davinite priests in an attempt to restore the Warmaster, at fatal cost to himself. Accounts of the rites concentrate on their purpose and outcome rather than their detail, and the Orrery treats them as a narrative beat rather than a fully documented ritual. His death precedes the boarding actions that ended the Siege of Terra, so he does not appear among the Sons of Horus who fought at the Palace.

His loyalty is best read as institutional service to Horus himself rather than adherence to the Imperial Truth or to Chaos as doctrine. That distinction sets him apart from Erebus and the Davinite lodge members, and places him closer to Abaddon, whose fidelity was likewise personal. Read on the map and timeline together, his career runs from Cthonia, through the Sixty-Three Nineteen campaign in the Great Crusade, to the Warmaster’s war fleet in the Heresy and the approach to Terra, making him a useful key for tracing how the Sons of Horus were governed rather than only how they fought.
