Euphrati Keeler

Euphrati Keeler was a remembrancer imagist of the 63rd Expedition whose faith in the God-Emperor made her one of the founding saints of the Imperial Cult. She served aboard the flagship Vengeful Spirit under Warmaster Horus, attached to the Luna Wolves during the Great Crusade. As a remembrancer she held no military rank and carried no weapon; her task was to record the Crusade in photographic images, not to fight in it. She is remembered chiefly for the conviction she formed against the Crusade’s official secular doctrine: that the Emperor of Mankind was to be worshipped as a god.

Keeler’s conviction took root on the compliance world of Sixty-Three Nineteen, where she encountered a native cult that already held the Emperor sacred, and where the tract later known as the Lectitio Divinitatus began to circulate among the fleet’s remembrancers and iterators. Her growing certainty set her apart from fellow remembrancers such as the poet Ignace Karkasy and the chronicler Mersadie Oliton, and placed her at odds with the Crusade’s official doctrine of unbelief, as expounded by the senior iterator Kyril Sindermann, who is recorded as later moving toward the same faith himself. Keeler documented the Crusade in a period when it still described itself as secular, and lived to see that self-description collapse around her.

When Horus turned against the Emperor and the Luna Wolves, by then renamed the Sons of Horus, massacred the loyalist forces gathered at Isstvan III, Keeler was among those who escaped the betrayal. She left the fleet aboard the frigate Eisenstein in the company of the Death Guard equerry Nathaniel Garro, whose loyalist crew carried proof of Horus’s treachery towards Terra. She brought with her, and never relinquished, the forbidden faith she had adopted on Sixty-Three Nineteen; accounts describe daemonic creatures recoiling from her presence during the flight, an effect later taken as evidence that the Emperor’s power moved through her.

Keeler’s arrival on Terra ahead of open civil war carried warning of Horus’s rebellion, and showed a Crusade that had suppressed all religion that veneration of the Emperor already had a following. The faith she preserved from Sixty-Three Nineteen and the Eisenstein became the seed of the Imperial Cult and, in time, of the Ecclesiarchy that now administers it. Imperial worship of the Emperor as a god persists in essentially the form Keeler recorded and defended; she is venerated as Saint Keeler, a status conferred on a civilian who took up no weapon but continued to bear witness throughout the Crusade’s transformation into Heresy.
