Iacton Qruze

Iacton Qruze was a veteran captain of the Luna Wolves, later the Sons of Horus, who opposed Horus’s turn and escaped Isstvan III aboard the Eisenstein. He is recorded as one of the oldest warriors of the XVI Legion, with service reaching back to the Legion’s earliest years on Terra, well before the recruitment on Cthonia that shaped its later ranks. That length of service gave him standing among the Legion’s captains and a personal history with Horus that few of his contemporaries shared.

Qruze is remembered chiefly for his early refusal to accept the changes in the Warmaster’s conduct. Accounts place his open dissent in the period after Horus’s convalescence at Davin, when the Luna Wolves were reorganised as the Sons of Horus and the Legion’s outlook shifted towards the Warmaster’s new counsellors. At Isstvan III, Horus set the Legion’s loyalist companies against the world’s defenders and their own kin, and Qruze was among those who survived the massacre. He joined Nathaniel Garro of the Death Guard and other survivors in taking the frigate Eisenstein, which left the system to carry warning of the treachery to Terra. The voyage was contested by Calas Typhon and by the instability of the warp passage. Later tradition records that Qruze did not live to see the warning delivered.

Qruze stands as one of the first witnesses to leave the Warmaster’s fleet with knowledge of the betrayal, and his fate is bound to the Eisenstein’s flight rather than to any later campaign. On the Orrery map he is anchored to Terra, where the Sons of Horus originated and where the warning was directed, and to Isstvan III, where he escaped. On the timeline he belongs to the opening phase of the Horus Heresy, alongside Garro, Garviel Loken, Saul Tarvitz and the remembrancers who carried testimony of the Legion’s corruption, with Horus, Ezekyle Abaddon and Typhon among those he opposed.
