Kyril Sindermann

Kyril Sindermann was a Terran-born iterator of the 63rd Expedition, an Imperial orator later linked to the origins of the Inquisition. During the Great Crusade he served among the remembrancers attached to Warmaster Horus’s fleet, holding no military rank; his office was to explain the Imperial Truth, the secular doctrine of the Crusade, to the worlds it brought into compliance. He is recorded as the mentor of the poet Ignace Karkasy and as a colleague of the imagist Euphrati Keeler and the chronicler Mersadie Oliton, and as a trusted acquaintance of the Luna Wolves captain Garviel Loken.

Sindermann’s certainty is recorded as failing on Sixty-Three Nineteen, where an oration delivered near the Whisperhead Mountains coincided with the first signs of a supernatural presence in the Expedition’s circle. Keeler’s growing faith in the Emperor as a god, and the spread of the Lectitio Divinitatus among the remembrancers, set him against the doctrine he had helped to propagate, and accounts describe his gradual turn from a sceptic to a witness of the powers he had once dismissed. As Horus’s rebellion emerged after the Isstvan III massacre, Sindermann is placed among the remembrancers who broke from the Warmaster’s circle and sought the Emperor’s authority on Terra; accounts differ on the details of his passage, and the escape of Garro’s frigate Eisenstein is the episode most often associated with his companions.

Later tradition credits him with a part in the founding of the Inquisition in the aftermath of the Heresy, and records his work under the name Veritus, though the surviving record is sparse and his fate is not firmly established; his status is therefore given here as unknown. His significance lies in what he shows of the Great Crusade’s intellectual life: an official secularism voiced by a man who came to doubt it. On the Orrery map his anchor is Terra, with Sixty-Three Nineteen and Isstvan III as the worlds that bind him to the Heresy timeline, alongside contemporaries such as Karkasy, Keeler, Oliton, Loken, and Nathaniel Garro.
