Erda

Perpetual

Also known as Mother of the Primarchs

Homeworld: Terra

Erda was a Perpetual, an immortal human and geneticist who helped the Emperor of Mankind create the Primarchs. Reckoned older than most human mythologies, she was among the last of the Perpetuals to remain at the Emperor’s side after her fellows withdrew from his labours, and she alone stayed to see the gene-work of the Primarchs completed. She was, in effect, the mother the twenty sons were never permitted to know: a role she accepted even as she came to distrust the purpose for which they had been made.

Erda’s attachment to her creations did not survive the Emperor’s decision to raise them as commanders of the Great Crusade. Unwilling to see her sons reduced to instruments of conquest, she opened a warp vortex that scattered the infant Primarchs across the galaxy, placing them beyond immediate recovery, and then withdrew from Terra’s affairs to conceal herself in the deserts of Mauritania. The Emperor, it is recorded, always knew where she had gone, yet chose never to compel her return — a forbearance that left her rebellion unpunished but also unresolved for millennia.

Erda re-entered the wider story of Terra during the Siege, when the agent John Grammaticus sought her out at Guelb in Mauritania, hoping she could grant him passage into the Imperial Palace as the war for the Throneworld reached its climax. She held no such authority to give, and gave him the seer Leetu in its place; she then read the stars and waited, by her own reckoning, for the Perpetual Ollanius Persson, whose arrival to the same ground was delayed. The episode binds her directly to the Siege of Terra’s final phase, fixing her, briefly, within the same moment and place as two other figures moving toward the Palace’s defence.

Her isolation ended when Erebus, First Chaplain of the Word Bearers, confronted her at Guelb with four Greater Daemons and demanded she submit to the Powers of Chaos. Erda met them by assuming three distinct forms in succession, destroying all four daemons, and refused to kneel; Erebus killed her with an athame, a ritual dagger suited to such a killing. Her death closed the confrontation without securing Erebus his submission.

Erda’s standing in the history of the Crusade and the Heresy rests on two acts rather than on any campaign: her creation of the Primarchs alongside the Emperor, and her unilateral decision to disperse them before they could be shaped solely as weapons. Her long concealment in Mauritania, tolerated but never interrupted by the Emperor, and her final refusal to bow to Erebus even at the cost of her life, mark her as a figure who answered neither to the Throne nor to Chaos, and whose death at the Siege of Terra closed a line of independence she had maintained since before the Crusade began.
