Koorland

Koorland is an Imperial Fists commander who rose to lead the Chapter during the War of the Beast and organised the Last Wall defence of Terra.

He is recorded as the last surviving officer of the Imperial Fists when the Ork invasion known as the War of the Beast overran the Segmentum Solar, and as the Chapter Master who took command of what remained. While the High Lords of Terra proved divided and slow to respond, Koorland invoked the Last Wall protocol, calling the scattered successors of the Imperial Fists to the Throneworld. Among the Chapters that answered were the Black Templars, the Crimson Fists and the Excoriators, and their forces were joined into a single defence of Terra. His allies also included the Fists Exemplar, a successor formation drawn from the survivors of shattered Chapters, whose warriors served among the Last Wall forces under his command. Accounts of the invasion place him alongside Drakan Vangorich, Grand Master of the Officio Assassinorum, who pursued a separate and covert course against High Lords he judged unfit for the crisis.

Koorland’s standing rests on the Last Wall, which is remembered as the military answer to a threat regarded as graver than any since the Horus Heresy. His command is bound to Terra and its orbital approaches, where the Ork fleet fought its way as far as Luna, and belongs to the same window as the war’s bracketing battles at Ullanor and Luna. Contemporaries in the period include the Beast, the Ork warlord opposing him, and Vangorich; the Ecclesiarch Mesring and Grand Provost Marshal Vernor Zeck are also named among the figures of the age. His fate after the war is not established in the material recorded here, and later accounts should be treated with caution.
