Mersadie Oliton was a documentarist remembrancer of the 63rd Expedition who served as Garviel Loken’s witness. Remembrancers were civilian artists engaged by the Great Crusade to record and present its conquests, and Oliton was not a soldier.
She left the Vengeful Spirit aboard the Eisenstein and spent the ensuing war subject to the designs of others. She was held in stasis and interrogated, and Maloghurst left a warp-eye within her. The daemon Samus appeared to her in dreams in the form of Keeler and guided her to the Phalanx, so that Dorn would confront a warp-gate there. Oliton understood the deception late. She ended the threat by ceasing to be the means by which the gate could be opened. The daemon vanished, and so did she.
The Great Crusade engaged artists to present conquest as inevitable, and Oliton’s footage and her death both stand at odds with that presentation. She recorded Loken while he was still a man. She died preventing a daemon from using that record as a passage.
