Nathaniel Garro

Nathaniel Garro commanded the Death Guard’s Seventh Company as Battle-Captain and later served Malcador as one of the first Knights-Errant. Born on Terra rather than Barbarus, he stood apart from most of his Legion even before the Isstvan campaigns exposed Horus’s treachery. Aboard the strike cruiser Eisenstein in orbit of Isstvan III, he refused the order to fire on loyalist Legionaries below and, at Isstvan V, escaped the massed betrayal of the Death Guard, Emperor’s Children, World Eaters and Sons of Horus alongside a small band of loyalists that included the Apothecary Meric Voyen. His seizure of the Eisenstein and its desperate flight through the warp, pursued by a corrupted sister ship, carried the first coherent account of the Warmaster’s rebellion to Terra, delivered in person to Malcador the Sigillite and the Emperor’s inner circle.

Recognising the value of an agent unbound by Legion command, Malcador drew Garro into the Knights-Errant, a covert order operating outside the loyalist Legions’ formal hierarchy during the Heresy’s opening years. In this role Garro pursued threats that conventional Legion doctrine was ill-suited to counter, including warp-corrupted renegades moving against Terra from within. His company on these missions came to include figures displaced by the Heresy’s upheavals, among them the former iterator Kyril Sindermann, the exiled Ultramarines Librarian Tylos Rubio, and Varren, a World Eater who broke from his Legion’s descent into slaughter to fight at his side. Tradition within Knights-Errant lore further links Garro’s cadre to the clandestine efforts on Titan that later crystallised into the Grey Knights, though the precise mechanics of that lineage are a matter of later inference rather than direct record.

Garro’s known contemporaries place him firmly within the Heresy’s first dark years: he answered to Malcador and, through him, to the Emperor’s wider design for Terra’s defence, while his enmities included former Death Guard brothers consumed by the warp’s corruption, such as the onetime captain turned traitor Ignatius Grulgor. Barbarus remained his adopted Legion’s spiritual home, the world whose grim resilience shaped Mortarion’s sons, but Garro’s own loyalty ran to Terra, the world of his birth and the seat of the cause he ultimately served. What became of him once the Knights-Errant’s covert war receded from the historical record is not conclusively established in open accounts; he is remembered as missing from the narrative rather than confirmed dead, his fate beyond the Heresy’s early campaigns left for later tradition to resolve.
